I ABSTRACT
Introduction: Phytotherapy is a therapeutic action of Natural and Traditional Medicine that is of great importance in preventing and treating diseases; therefore, research interest was taken into the scientific foundations that support its therapeutic use. Objective: To delve into the importance of the therapeutic use of phytotherapy through the support of scientific evidence. Methods: A bibliographic review of scientific studies that support the importance of the therapeutic use of phytotherapy was conducted. Results: A deeper look at the scientific evidence supports the importance of the therapeutic use of phytotherapy. The active ingredients in plants exert mechanisms of action in the body, and their proper use is highly useful for preventing and treating diseases. Their use can be through the natural use of plants or through medications made from them (phytopharmaceuticals). Both forms of preparation comprise phytotherapy. Although further scientific confirmation is needed, this therapeutic action of Natural and Traditional Medicine includes a large number of plants with proven therapeutic properties that can be integrated into conventional disease treatment. Conclusions: The scientific evidence provided a deeper understanding of the importance of the therapeutic use of phytotherapy, asserting that it offers significant potential for combining with conventional medicines in the treatment and prevention of diseases. Although there are still limitations in its research, these must be overcome in view of its integration into a holistic approach to health care.
